Koleka Mlisana, MBChB, MMedPath(Micro) is the associate professor and Head of Medical Microbiology Dept at the Univ of KwaZulu Natal(UKZN) and National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) based at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital(IALCH) Academic Complex. She was previously a co-investigator and Project Director of the CAPRISA 004 tenofovir gel trial at the eThekwini site as well as the Head of HIV Pathogenesis and Vaccine Research Programme at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA).


She has undertaken seminal research which has revealed how the body responds during acute HIV infection. She was, until recently, the Protocol co-Chair and Project Director of the CAPRISA 002 study, an 8 year follow-up study of patients with acute HIV infection. Prof Mlisana has been a member of the Board of the South African Medical Research Council and currently sits on the National Advisory Group on Immunisation (NAGI). She has recently been appointed through the Council on Higher Education into the board of NHLS. She currently is the chairperson of the SA AIDS Conference to be held in 2013.
